Diary Entry Ten

Today I have finally put my contact sheets of my photoshoot onto my blog. Of all the images i took, only a few will actually feature in my magazine. In my contact sheet it is obvious to see on certain ones why i havent used them as they are either blurry, not focused, or would clearly not work well in my magazine. Also, i have completed my contents and double page spread drafts. I have chosen to sketch these drafts and scan them into the computer as i find it easier than using photoshop, and also i will be using photoshop on the final piece so i want my final piece to look a lot better than my draft. I have sketched down my ideas for my pages and how i roughly want them to look. The sketches do not look like much at the moment, but once i start using my actual images and text in photoshop, it will all come together and finally look like a page from a magazine.

This post shows my sketch of my double page spread for my magazine which I then scanned into the computer. I sketched this image so that I had a basic structure to go by and to get my ideas down on paper so that I dont forget them.

Diary Entry Nine

During this week i have completed my sell line ideas, contents page ideas and my first article draft. With my sell lines, i tried to come up with ideas which i knew would interest the reader and draw them in to read the magazine. Certain sell lines are almost left on a cliff hanger which makes the reader want to know more. Also, i have included particular artists which link to the genre of the magazine and are popular, therefore people will want to see them within the magazine. My contents page ideas are similar to my sell lines but with slightly more information. I also included extra aspects within my contents page so that the reader knows there is more included in the magazine than just the elements with sell lines. When starting my article draft i knew i wanted to use questions which werent only to do with the music industry, this way it will allow the reader to also learn about the 'artist' and their background. Also, i wanted the artist in my article to seem unaffected by the fame and public eye, this way the audience can relate to the artist. Before my final article piece i want to go through it again and if needed add more questions.

A role model, unique, talented, superstardom, music out of this world would be the only way we could possibly describe Ellen Harbison. Not only is she the hot new indie artist on the scene, she’s an inspiration throughout the UK with her album being a non-mover at number one in the charts for the past 6 weeks! “magazine name” are the only magazine to know the real star herself, and a ultimate interview to put the rumours to bed!
At last, we finally meet! Thank you so much for coming down today, how does it feel to be the most talked about act in the UK?
Ah it’s no trouble at all! It’s all so new to me; I’m finding it hard to get my head around. It’s weird because I still see myself as the normal Ellen from Kent!
Well ‘Ellen from Kent’ your now a role model and inspiration to the younger generation! How do you feel about that?
Its odd hearing people say that! (Laughs). I love that people can think of me as a role model, especially young adults who are trying to break into the industry. When I was younger Avril Lavigne was my role model, and her music really inspired me which helped me with my own goals and dreams. I hope that I can help people in this way too.
Will there be a second album coming out anytime soon?
(Smiles) I’d love to create a second album, so that could be a possibility! Depending on how things go will anticipate how soon I will be recording a second album. I may have a few tricks up my sleeve! (Laughs).
We’ve seen you’ve been spending time in London, have you had a chance to hit any clubs?
I sure have, I’m quite the party animal on the sly, and I love a night out! So far I’ve been to Ministry of Sound, Tiger Tiger, Kanaloa, and Movida.
Have you been introduced to any celebrities whilst here in London?
Yeah, I’ve recently met Fearne Cotton, Bruno Mars, Professor Green, and Rihanna. Rihanna has actually shown me around and helped me out quite a lot, considering I’m new to everything in central London! She’s been really friendly, and has accompanied me on my nights out.
So, what’s it like going home to Kent?
(Smiles) Oh I love going home; I miss it and everyone so much! Everyone back home is so supportive and is loving my music.
Are there any things you have to do differently now, than before when your home?
A few things here and there. I miss being able to quickly nip into Maccy D’s in my pyjamas for food to cure my hangover! (laughs). I want my old life back at certain times, but I’m so happy to of achieved my dream, and I’m loving everything. It feels great to finally be able to sing my own music and share it with everyone.
So Ellen there’s been a few rumours which we are dying to know the truth about! Apparently the word on the street is that you may be headlining Reading next summer, and you have found yourself a mystery man?
(Laughs) well! Next summer is a possibility, but nothing has been finalized, so it is yet to be confirmed! And as for the ‘mystery man’, there is someone I’m seeing at the moment but we are taking things slowly, so I will not be revealing who he is just yet.
Ooh how exciting on both parts! Not only are you an amazing music artist, but we have seen that you’re the right fashionista! Where do you mainly shop?
Ooh I wouldn’t say that! Err; I suppose I mainly shop in Topshop to be honest. I’ve always loved their clothes and will continue to shop there! I love trying out new trends and jazzing outfits up a bit! I think the more unique and unusual, the better.
Right, Ellen if you could give someone advice about how to break into the music industry, what would it be?
I would say to constantly post videos of yourself singing on YouTube. Take criticism on board as you will find it helps you a lot. Vary the genre of music that you sing, and show off your talent. Never give up, even if people knock you down; keep on trying.

Diary Entry Eight

I have just completed my media schedule of things to do towards my magazine. By creating a schedule it allows me to know what things i still need to do before completing the whole task, and what aspects i am missing. Also, as i finish elements on my schedule i will be able to go down the list which ensures that i complete everything. Having a schedule i can keep up to date with what has been done and what i need to do. My media schedule tells me exactly what to do and allows me to keep up with ongoing tasks.

Diary Entry Seven

This week i have completed my audience profile, and have displayed it in a slideshare to vary what i use.  My audience profile has shown me what i should and shoulnt include in my magazine as it tells me what the public wants to featured in my magazine, therefore will sell better. Also, i have booked my photoshoot in for next week so that it allows me to prepare and begin thinking of ideas which will best relate to my genre of magazine and how it will appeal to the public. I am yet to do a draft of my magazine, which i will have to be picking a font for and begin my schedule.

Proposal

Here is a post showing my proposal. This was made before creating my magazine, and allowing me to choose what i wanted my magazine to be like and how i wanted it to be successful. It partly shows some of my ideas and why i want them included in my magazine.
Type of magazine:

The music magazine type that I would like to create will be of the Indie genre. I have chosen this genre because I like this music and also I like the style of these music artists. I want my magazine to be fun and exciting; therefore I think this type of music fits in well considering most Indie tracks are upbeat and loud. This genre of music is not emotive and does not make the listener feel emotional or upset; it does the opposite which links to how I want my magazine to come across. I think this magazine will be popular and sell well because everyone is open to the idea of a brand new indie magazine. It reaches out to more than one target audience, and no one can deny that there are at least a few tracks that appeal to everyone within the Indie music industry. Also, within this genre there are music artists of a range of age groups which therefore attract different people.

Content of magazine:

Within my magazine there will be different features to keep the audience entertained, also having a variety ensures that the reader will not become bored. Even though it is a magazine, I want there to be a double page spread of an interview of the music artist whose track is the current number one. This keeps the public up to date in the music charts, as well as giving them an opportunity to learn what goes on in the life of a music artist and what they are to do next. During my magazine I will also inform the reader as I will have a certain page relating to tours and concerts. This gives the public the opportunity to possibly attend events and possibly become involved a competition linking to these aspects.

Style of magazine:

Magazines which I have previously researched such as ‘NME’ and ‘MOJO’ are the style of magazines which I want mine to shadow and be like. They are loud within their colours; they look busy and attract the reader with the top successful music artists at this time.

Competition to your magazine:

My magazine would be competing against other Indie magazines such as ‘NME’, ‘MOJO’ etc.  For my magazine to become more successful and attract more people I will have to make it different to the others; make it stand out, use the top selling artists, make my features interesting, and have a variety of events/music information. I could use certain ideas from researched magazines and make them better with my own ideas as I know that they have already been successful.

Target Audience:

My music magazine would reach out to a variety of people because there is something for everyone within the genre of music I have chosen. In the main, my target audience would be young adults. This is because they are constantly up to date with the music charts, fashion, and the ‘goings-on’ within the industry. Also, young adults would mainly buy this magazine because they have the most free time, as they are most likely studying whether it being in school, college or university.

Business features:

My magazine will be published by IPC as it is a well known music magazine publishing company. The audience will recognise the company and it will help it sell considering all its other magazines have succeeded.

Why I feel it will succeed:

I feel that my magazine will succeed because I will use images which relate to the theme, as well as including different features to other magazines. Also, my magazine will be or both male and female, this way it can appeal to a larger group of people.

Diary Entry Six

This week i have begun using photoshop to try out my name ideas in different fonts. I wanted to experiment with different fonts therefore i have a variety to choose from and i will be able to see which one i think will work best within my magazine. I have used the "dafont" website to download these fonts for me to use and experiment. Also, i am waiting for a few more votes on my questionnaire before i create my audience profile this week. By the end of the week hopefully i will have finished my questionnaire, depending on the votes i have recieved. This will then help me throughout creating my magazine, as i will know for sure what is most likely to appeal to the reader.

Diary Entry Five

Throughout half term i have created my moodboard, name ideas and colour connotations for my music magazine. In my moodboard i have researched different elements which relate to the genre of music i have chosen. The images represent rock/indie and have given me ideas for what i want my magazine image to be like and how i want my model to be dressed. My name ideas are of a variety but they are all one word, this is because i think they stand out and stick in the readers mind. Also other music magazines have one word names which seem to be successful and eye catching such as: NME, MOJO, VIBE etc. Also i want my magazine name to sound harsh and blunt because i think that way it will stand out more because it will be short and snappy. For my magazine i have chosen to stick with four different colours such as, red, blue, black and white. I feel that all of these colours work well together and play off one another with their different representations. Also each colour appeals to both sexes which refers to my target audience. Through completing these different tasks it has allowed me to think of the design of my magazine and more ideas.

Name Ideas

This post shows my possible name ideas from the beginning and reasons behind why I might have chosen them.

Some name ideas i thought of for my magazine are:

I have chosen these different names for my magazine because i like the idea of a one word name for my magaze as i think it is more eye catching and sticks in the readers mind. Also, i want the name of my magazine to be 'catchy' which i think all of these words are. By using the letters 'c', 'ck', 'x', they all sound harsh and blunt which stand out to the reader which i what i want my magazine to do. Also 'RIM' stands for rock, indie music which i the genre of my music magazine, and 'LOCO' means crazy in spanish which foreshadows that this magazine will be crazy and different to any other magazine.

Diary Entry Four
Today i began my proposal for my magazine. I have decided that my music magazine will be based on the indie/rock genre of music. During my proposal i have included why i chose this specific genre, what audience my magazine will be aimed at and why it will appeal to my target audience. Also i referred back to past research i had recently carried out during this course and explained how they will help me and influence my ideas, such as images, colours, text etc. Furthermore, in my proposal i have written about what my magazine will feature and why it will be different to my competitors and what will make it more successful.
Through writing my proposal it has helped me think of more ideas for my magazine and what i need to do for it to be successful.

Diary Entry Three

The third task that was set was to create a prezi researching key concepts. As i hdd never used prezi before it was all new to me and i didnt know what the layout was or how anything worked. Once i got the hang of it, it became a lot easier. Some parts of the research was easier to find that others, especially as parts were obvious because you could use your own thoughts when talking about what appeals to you most and how you think music artists are represented to you and others. I am yet to add images to my prezi because it looks slightly dull and boring as it only consists of text, but i am still learning so hopefully it will come together eventually!

Diary Entry Two

During the second week my next task was to analyse magazine covers and contents pages. When analysing these pages I had to think in depth for why elements were placed in certain areas and what it said to the reader. As I analysed each page they gave me ideas for what i could use when creating my own music magazine. Also, as i noticed what particlular aspects jumped out to me and worked well on the pages i anlysed, it allowed me to understand how they have grabbed the readers attention. I prefered analysing certain pages because i am not a fan of all the genres. This task was time consuming but i found it interesting as magazines appeal to me most in the media.

Diary Entry One

When starting this course, the first task was to create a magazine front cover and a contents page. This magazine was to be sold in the school, therefore we had to pick a target audience which would include students. We frist had to draft our front cover and contents pages including: a masthead, sell lines, cover image, page numbers, page title, images referring to the pages. After creating our drafts, we then had to create our designs with photoshop.  I struggled with this because I had not had much experience with photoshop. I am satisfied with the final piece as I think I succeeded considering I knew very little when using photoshop.
